Monsoon Special Fenugreek Kanji- Not Bitter but Better for Health
Though it’s a poetic experience to watch and get drenched in the downpour, Monsoonis generally considered a period of epidemic outbreaks, famine and much hardships in the past. The persistent rains and humidity in the air badly affects body’s immunity and makes it prone to cold, cough, fever and many other water-borne diseases. Your body needs extra care and preparation to go through this and as per Ayurveda, this is the right time to get your body rejuvenated and strengthened. And ‘Fenugreek Kanji’(Methi Porridge) is an integral part of this seasonal wellness regimen which is a simple way to boost your immunity, rejuvenate your body and protect it from many pathological infections.
Fenugreek, whether as a seed or green, is one of the most used ancient spices. The yellowish seeds taste great as food as well as gives many health benefits too. As medicinal food, they are said to help regulate blood cholesterol, blood sugar, in weight loss, reduce menstrual discomfort and balancing hormones in women, resolve hair problems and a lot more.
The main reason for which the Old Timers advised us to include fenugreek seeds in your diet during the monsoon season is that, they helps in digestion, acid reflux (heartburn) and any stomach ailments. They are rich in soluble fiber, protein and antioxidants which helps to flush out the toxins and thus rejuvenating the body. And Fenugreek Kanji you can rustle up in a jiffy and tastes great too, making it enjoyable not just during the Monsoons, but at any time of the year, no doubt.
Fenugreek Kanji is essentially a Rice Gruel which has the flavour of coconut milk and a dash of fenugreek’s bitterness. Each ingredient of this tasty preparation has a specific role to play as it helps to balance the humours in our body. The gruel not only cleans the body from the inside but also aids in good digestion. It is also very effective for improving immunity and one should have this ‘medicinal porridge’ continuously for 7 days ormultiplies of the week like 2 weeks (14 days), 3 weeks (21 days) etc. for optimum result. Here’s sharing a recipe of Monsoon Special Fenugreek Kanji that you can prepare with the ingredients easily available at your home.
- Fenugreek – ¾ Cup
- Raw Rice- ¼ Cup
- Jaggery- 2 Nos. ( or as per your liking)
- Coconut Milk- ¼ Cup
- Cumin Powder- ¼ tsp.
- Water- 3 Cups
- Soak washed fenugreeks in water for 3-4 hours
- Add two cups of water, raw rice and the soaked fenugreeks without draining the water and cook on a medium heat up to 2 whistles. Allow to cool.
- Open the lid and gently mash cooked rice and fenugreeks with the base of a ladle. Add Jaggery to this and boil. If you don't want the porridge to be sweet, avoidjaggery and instead add enough salt to make it taste good.
- When the mix turns thicker, add coconut milk and cumin powder. Mix well and turn off the flame. Add more coconut milk for adjusting the consistency.
