Sweet Almond Oil - A Healthy addition to cooking, skincare and haircare

All of us might have known the nutritious benefits of almonds. Almonds are rich in vitamins, healthy fats, antioxidants, minerals etc. They're commonly referred as nuts but actually they're seeds found inside the almond fruit. Almonds are very rich in fat, a perfect source of oil. The oil extracted from almonds is known as almond oil. Almond oil is as equally nutritious as almonds and offer a lot of health and beauty benefits.

Dry almonds are pressed to extract oil. This oil is unrefined and retains all the nutritious value. Only a low heat is involved during the extraction process making it rich in flavor and nutritional content. Unrefined almond oil is a little bit expensive but a better choice for culinary purposes.

Refined almond oil is made using high heat and chemicals to extract oil from almonds. Obviously this process makes the oil low in nutritional content. Most of the nutrient contents in almonds will lost during the extraction process. It's less expensive compared to the unrefined almond oil.

Almond oil has two varieties namely sweet almond oil and bitter almond oil.
Sweet almond oil is made from almonds which do not contain any poisonous chemicals. On the other hand bitter almond oil is extracted from bitter almonds which contain a poisonous chemical called hydrogen cyanide. Bitter almond oil is used for medicinal purposes. Cold pressed or unrefined sweet almond oil is the best to include in cooking, skincare and haircare regime.

The four most important nutrients found in Sweet Almond oil are Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and zinc. It does contain a small amount of vitamin K.

1. Heart health
Almond oil consists of monosaturated fat. These monosaturated fats have been shown to increase levels of HDL, good cholesterol and lower LDL, bad cholesterol.

2. Blood sugar control
Including almond oil in diet may help blood sugar level in check. Almond oil is rich in monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Both thess have been shown to help lower blood sugar in people with diabetes.

3. Rich in antioxidants
Almond oil is rich in Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant. Vitamin E protects cell from harmful substances called free radicals. Free radical overload leads to oxidative damage. Studies have shown that intake of Vitamin E can help lower the risk of heart disease.

4. Healthy skin.
Topical application of Almond oil makes skin soft and supple. It's packed with Vitamin E which protects skin from sun damage and premature aging. Almond oil can be used as a natural moisturizer. It's really good to improve skin texture and complexion. Moreover it's noncomedogenic. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties too.

5.  Healthy hair
Sweet Almond oil is a very nourishing oil. It makes hair stronger. It's rich in biotin which helps in hair regrowth and decrease hair fall. Using almond oil on scalp and hair  not only nourishes hair follicles but also makes it less prone to breakage.
