Para is the traditional measuring vessel in Kerala, used to measure rice. After a good harvest season, 1 or more Paras of rice offering was made to the Gods at the local temple. This practice is still followed in Kerala for festivals and other occasions like Onam. The Para is filled with husked rice, and bunches of Coconut tree flowers are placed on top, signifying abundance.
